The Siu Hua Yu / Pan Cada Dia Food Subsidy Program Celebrates its 10th Year Anniversary

Posted by: Genner Cerna at September 21st, 2015

In 2005, the director of the College Admissions and Aid Office, Mr. Conrado Z. Balatbat, proposed to put up a food subsidy program that aims to help feed many hungry students daily. The idea came about when he found out that there were actually many students who went to class on an empty stomach because their families could only afford one or two meals a day.

Ms. Ruth Yu-Owen and Mr. Conrado Z. Balatbat

The program was conceived in September of 2005, with the help of Ms. Ruth Yu – Owen, an alumna who donated the seed money of fifty thousand pesos (P50,000). It was named, the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Cada Dia Food Subsidy Program to commemorate her late sister, Siu Hua Yu. Siu graduated in 1984 from the Ateneo de Zamboanga University with a degree in AB Mass Communication.

Beneficiaries of the program are given one coupon daily. Coupons are worth P35.00 each and may be used as payment for food at the university cafeteria. With only 10 recipients to the program, we are now able to feed 61 students as of last counting. All of these has been made possible because of the ever growing support from alumni, friends, students and even strangers.

Aside from donations, many organizations and individuals facilitated various fund raising events to help the Program. Last May 3, 2015, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University and the ADZU Alumni Association held a fund raising campaign for the benefit of the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Cada Dia Food Subsidy Program, dubbed as the “Mega fight for our scholars – the Pacquiao – Mayweather Fight”, held at the Carlos Dominguez Hall, LRC Building of ADZU. The show was a success as about 200 alumni and friends came to Ateneo to show their support to the fund raising event.

The program has been instrumental in helping many students, for the past 10 years, reach their dreams of attaining a degree in the Ateneo without having to suffer being hungry in class. Poverty is indeed never a hindrance to success. Former recipients who came from financially challenged families are now successfully working as teachers, bank employees, and office workers to name a few. The beneficiaries are forever thankful to the many kind hearted benefactors who supported the program over the past 10 years. Below are some words from our current and previous beneficiaries;

“I have always dreamt of attaining a degree and helping my family in the future. Getting a scholarship in the Ateneo de Zamboanga University brought me a step closer to my dreams. However, my father’s meager income as a carpenter was barely enough to support the basic needs of the family. There were days when I had to go to class hungry as I only have enough money for transportation. It was not easy to concentrate in class when I was hungry, but God truly works in mysterious ways. I heard of the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Cada Dia Food Subsidy Program and decided to ask about it the scholarships office (now the College Admissions and Aid Office). With daily food coupons for lunch, I was able to concentrate in class properly. I am now a public school teacher and able to help my family as well. I attribute my success to the Ateneo de Zamboanga University and the many generous benefactors of the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Cada Dia Program. I am forever grateful…”

“As a child, I have always dreamt of becoming a teacher someday. I know that education is key to a brighter future. Earning a degree will not only help me and my family, but earning a degree in education will also be a channel for me to be able to be an instrument in molding future leaders of the country. But this dream will only remain a dream if not for the scholarship programs of the Ateneo.

My mother is a plain housewife, while my father works as a blacksmith in our town. My father’s meager income is barely enough to meet the daily needs of the family. It is for this reason that I have never thought that I could go to a prestigious university such as the Ateneo. I know that I am truly blessed to be accepted as a scholar. But the monthly allowance that my parents send me is not enough to cover my needs in school. There are days when I have to skip lunch so that I would have money for my fare or to pay for a project. There are even times when I have to skip breakfast and lunch all together as my parents do not have money to send. When the Office of Scholarships learned about my problem, I was given the opportunity to be part of the program. The Pan Cada Dia Food Subsidy Program is an answered prayer. I know that I am now closer to reaching my dreams.

To the generous benefactors of the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Cada Dia Food Subsidy Program, Daghang Salamat Kaninyong tanan!”

They are only a few of the many beneficiaries over the years who are, and will forever be grateful to the many kind hearted and generous beneficiaries of the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Cada Dia Food Subsidy Program.

We can all help change lives. Now that the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Cada Dia Food Subsidy Program is celebrating its 10th year, we are all hoping to touch more lives and help more people in the future.

As part of our efforts to continue feeding more students, we are launching the Pan Cada Dia Anniversary T-Shirt for a Cause Fund Raising Campaign. T-shirts are sold at P500.00. Aside from this, other income generating activities are being planned. Proceeds of the fund raising campaign will help augment the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Cada Dia Fund. Let us all pay it forward, be one of us and help support the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Cada Dia Food Subsidy Program. Your donation will help change lives.

My life has never been the same because of the many generous benefactors who helped me get an Ateneo education and of course have access to free lunch daily through the Su Hua Yu / Pan Cada Dia Program. A few years ago, my father died and my mother left us behind with our grandmother. my brother and I were simply hopeless then. We were even thinking that we could not go to college anymore. We lived on dole-outs from relatives and friends who knew our situation. But I believe that God is truly good. He sent angels in different forms to help us along the way. I am still in awe because of all the blessings that He has showered on us. Our journey is not easy, but with God’s help, perseverance and sacrifice, we are getting by. My elder brother is now about to graduate and I am also a step closer to achieving my dreams. All of these will not be possible if not for God’s help and the many kind and generous people who support the Scholarships and Pan Cada Dia Program. I hope that I too will be able to help others like me someday.

I am so grateful that I have been given the opportunity to enjoy the Pan Kada Dia food subsidy program. I don’t usually get to eat three meals daily, since my parents do not have enough money to support my college education or even my own personal needs, but with the subsidy program, I am now able to have a decent meal.

The program is a blessing to underprivileged students like me whose dream is to earn a diploma and be able to help my less fortunate family.

I can only say  Thank youť to all of those who made the program possible. I am now a step nearer to achieving my dreams.

For students who come from broken homes and whose parents could not afford to support the daily needs of their children, the Pan Kada Dia Food Subsidy Program is “Heaven Sent”. To all those people who made the program possible, Thank you!

I am now more hopeful that there is still a brighter future ahead.

I used to eat twice-a-day only, as my parents who are in the province, are sending me a very minimal allowance. If I eat three times daily, I won’t have enough money left for projects and photocopies. The Siu Hua Yu / Pan Kada Dia food subsidy program made college life less of a struggle.

I would like to thank all of the generous people who shared their blessings to underprivileged students like me.

It’s a great opportunity to be a beneficiary of the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Kada Dia Food Subsidy Program. Most of the time, I don’t have enough money for food or other school related projects as my allowance is barely enough to meet my needs in school. The program helped me a lot because I no longer have to go to class hungry.

I can say that the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Kada Dia Food Subsidy program helped me a lot. My family is in a state of financial and emotional turmoil at the moment. My mother is currently the sole breadwinner of the family as my father is sick and needs expensive medication.

The program helped ease my mother’s burden of sending more for my school related needs. I save whatever extra I have so that I do not have to ask additional money for my school needs anymore.

I am most thankful to the benefactors who helped sustain the program. Your generosity will never be forgotten.

At present, there are five of us in the family who are in school. This is the reason why my parents are doing their best to try to make ends meet. The Pan Kada Dia Food Subsidy Program opened doors of opportunity to people like us. I don’t have to endure long class hours having hunger pains.

Thank you and God Bless.

The Siu Hua Yu / Pan Kada Dia Food Subsidy Program is a blessing to me. I am now able to eat lunch and dinner well. With the P30.00 food coupon, I get to complete two full meals daily. I divide whatever viand I am able to obtain from the coupon into two so that I am able to eat dinner too. I feel so blessed that I, not only get to enroll in a prestigious school via a scholarship, but I am also given the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the subsidy program.

I would like to say thank all of those who unselfishly shared their blessings and made the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Kada Dia Food Subsidy Program possible. The Program is helping me survive college life. I know that I will not be able to get a degree without the program, because my parents could only afford to send me a meager sum of money monthly as my allowance.

The program gave me hope. I am now more determined to finish college, get a degree and be able to help my family in the future.

I am Paul Henry S. Herrera, a 2nd year BSMA student and a scholar of the Ateneo College Parents Council. I’m so grateful for having the priviledge to receive a PKD food coupon during class days, having this coupon is a big help for me because this entitles me to eat lunch for free. Before without the PKD I rarely ate my lunch because the money given to me is just enough for my fare. Thank you very much and God bless.

It is a blessing to be a recipient of the Pan Kada Dia Program. It is a great help for me because I don’t have enough daily allowance to buy my lunch. Thank you.

Siu Hua Yu / Pan Kada Dia is a great blessing to me. I enjoyed the privilege of Pan Kada Dia for some years now. Thank you very much.

I’m thankful that Siu Hua Yu / Pan Kada Dia has been implemented because it gave scholars like me the priviledge of going to class with a full stomach. Scholars such as myself who come from the provinces, have a limited budget to sustain my daily needs. Without the PKD, I experienced being hungry in class and not being able to concentrate well. I feel so blessed because I am now able to eat lunch for free. Unlike before, I had one meal a day and sometimes “one day no eat.” It’s a big help for me to be able to focus on my studies. Thank you so much.

Siu Hua Yu / Pan Kada Dia Food Subsidy Program really plays a big role especially to students like me. With my daily allowance of P20.00, it is very hard for me to budget my allowance. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of this program. I hope this program will last. Thank you so much!

Because of the Pan Kada Dia Program I no longer miss my lunch. Previously, I would spend most of my lunch time break reading in the library. Now, even if I do not have money for lunch, I no longer worry because I already have a free lunch at the canteen. Whenever I have school requirements- that needs photocopying- I will have some money to spare.Thank you to the contributors of the Pan Kada Dia food subsidy program. I am most grateful.

It is my 213th day in the Ateneo de Zamboanga University and aside from the scholarship that I am enjoying, there is this special project of the Office of Scholarships where I am one of the beneficiaries. It provides me with the giftť of a free meal during lunch time. I receive a food coupon from the office everyday and I get to eat at the canteen. I feel so lucky. I no longer know how to express my endless appreciation to the benefactors and my most benevolent thanks to the office. I hope that this project will continue to enable more students like me.Thank you and God speed.

JUSTIN’S STORY

 Emir R Españo

My father died of cancer at the National Kidney Institute in 1989. I still can’t believe how we survived that crisis then.  I was the eldest of four siblings and we come from a very small and very ordinary family. God worked through people who came like angels to help us.  One of them came with a story that I have not forgotten and never will.  Justin was my student in theology when he was a college freshman at the Ateneo de Zamboanga.  He came to visit me at the funeral parlor and offered a rather huge amount as help for the expenses during the wake.  I thanked him and we sat quietly for a while.

He spoke about his success story in his insurance career after graduating with honors at Ateneo.  He was from one of the little towns in Zamboanga del Sur and we reminisced his days as a cocofed scholar and there were many good and beautiful memories shared.  He then said something that totally floored me.  He said, “Sir, do you know that during most of my four years in college, my brother and I only had one meal a day?”  He continued, “My brother and I had to share whatever little allowance our parents could send. We were staying at a boarding house at Calarian.  Because we had no money for transportation, we were up very early in the morning so we could start walking to school taking the Cawa-Cawa Boulevard route.  Very few of my classmates in the pilot section knew this. They did not know that there were days while they took their lunch at the cafeteria I was at the fountain drinking as much water as possible to sustain me during the day.  There were days I survived on water and candies.”  He was smiling as he finished telling his story.

I was shaken and wanted to tell him that I am sorry I did not know and that I could have looked for ways to help… but this was all water under the bridge for him now.

As I marveled at the exceptional triumph of the human spirit shown in the life-story of this young man, I wondered how many more students there are at ADZU and other schools who are hungry while trying to learn and study and get a college education.

You may want to help hungry students like Justin at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University today.  Please go to the THE SIU HUA YU FUND/ PAN CADA DIA PROGRAM atwww.pankadadia.org

The Siu Hua Yu / Pan Kada Dia food subsidy program is a blessing to me and my family. Getting married early to a husband who does not have a stable job  and having a son didn’t stop me from pursuing my dream of getting a degree. I continued to find ways to support my sec

ondary education where I graduated as class valedictorian. It is for this reason that I qualified for a scholarship in college. However, despite the fact that I don’t have to pay for anything in school, my husband and I are still having a hard time supporting my re

quirements in school. The opportunity to enjoy the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Kada Dia food subsidy pr

ogram is such a blessing to me and my family. It lessened our worries and I am now able to concentrate more on my studies.

To the benefactors. Daghang Salamat kaninyong tanan!

I feel so blessed to be a grantee of the Siu Hua Yu / Pan Kada Dia food subsidy program. Thirty pesos a day for some may be a minimal amount, but for me and my family, it means a lot. It helps me become more active in school as I no longer have to face the day with an empty stomach. It is helping me achieve my goal of providing a brighter future for my family. I am very grateful for having been chosen to enjoy the Pan Kada Dia program. It is a big help for me as my guardian no longer have to provide for my lunch. I know that many needy scholars like me are as grateful as I am. I hope that the program will continue to grow and help more scholars. I am looking forward to the time when I will also be able to contribute and return the favor to others. To the benefactors, Thank you!
